The Future of Quantum Computing and AI:
IBM & Illinois Lead the Charge at SXSW 2025

By Rex M. Lee, Security Advisor/Tech Journalist, My Smart Privacy

At SXSW 2025, I attended an insightful session featuring IBM CEO Arvind Krishna and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. They discussed the future of quantum computing and unveiled a groundbreaking partnership between IBM and the state of Illinois.

A Bipartisan Commitment to Quantum Innovation

Governor Pritzker highlighted the bipartisan support that the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP) received during the first Trump administration. He expressed optimism that the current Trump administration would continue backing this initiative, ensuring the United States remains a global leader in quantum research and development.

The conversation tackled key questions:

  • How will AI and quantum computing reshape industries, cybersecurity, and innovation?
  • What roles will governments and tech leaders play in driving this revolution?
  • Why is Illinois emerging as a global leader in quantum technology?

Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP): A Game-Changer

Located on Chicago’s Southeast Side, the IQMP is a bold initiative to establish Illinois as a powerhouse in quantum computing and microelectronics. Built on the former U.S. Steel South Works site, the park spans 128 acres, with an additional 312 acres reserved for future expansion.

Key Highlights of IQMP

  • Anchor Tenant – PsiQuantum
    • Palo Alto-based PsiQuantum is investing over $1 billion to construct a 300,000 sq. ft. Quantum Computer Operations Center.
    • This project will create 150+ jobs within five years and push the boundaries of fault-tolerant quantum computing.
  • DARPA-Illinois Quantum Proving Ground
    • In partnership with DARPA, Illinois is establishing a Quantum Proving Ground to test next-generation quantum computing prototypes.
    • The project has secured $280 million in state and federal funding.

Why This Matters

The IQMP initiative is projected to:

  • Generate up to $20 billion in economic impact
  • Create thousands of high-tech jobs
  • Position Illinois as a global hub for quantum innovation

With industry leaders like PsiQuantum and DARPA involved, Illinois is poised to lead the next era of quantum computing and AI advancements.
